Rules & Scoring

How performance becomes a number

Iron Paw Challenge measures every performance against a single, dynamic global standard — the Global Dynamic 100. Three scores sit on top of that line: ELO ranks the dog over time, Event Score locks in what happened on the day, and Current Level shows how that performance reads today.

The three scores

01
ELO
Overall competitive rating

The dog's competitive rating over time. Used for overall rankings — shows how strong the dog is as a competitor.

  • Driven by placement in each event
  • Weighted by the strength of opponents
  • Adjusted by event size and importance
ELO is not calculated directly from centimetres, seconds or reps. Event Score decides placement — placement moves ELO.
02
Event Score
Locked official result

The dog's official score in a specific event. Decides the winner, podium and the official event result.

  • Calculated against the Global Dynamic 100 as it was on the event date
  • Locked permanently once the event is approved
Event Score is not "best dog in today's event = 100". The line is the best approved global performance on that date.
03
Current Level
How it reads today

Shows how a performance stands compared to today's level. Used on dog profiles, discipline statistics and historical comparisons.

  • Recalculated against today's Global Dynamic 100
  • Updates as new records are approved
Current Level does not change old event results. Event Scores remain locked forever.

Global Dynamic 100

In each discipline, the best approved global performance is worth 100 points. Every other result is scored against that line. If a new record is set and approved, it becomes the new 100 mark — but past Event Scores never change.

Beating the line
A dog can score above 100 in a discipline. Example sprint: old best 4.80 s → new dog runs 4.70 s → 4.80 / 4.70 × 100 = 102.13 points. After approval, 4.70 becomes the new Global Dynamic 100 for future events.

Scoring families

Every discipline belongs to one of four families. The formula stays the same inside a family — only the input changes.

Lower is better 50m Sprint · 100m Sprint · Weave
Points = best global time ÷ dog's time × 100
Example
Best global time 4.80 s
Dog's time 5.12 s
4.80 ÷ 5.12 × 100
= 93.75 points
Higher is better A-Frame · Trackmill
Points = dog's result ÷ best global result × 100
Example
Best global A-Frame 80 reps
Dog's result 72 reps
72 ÷ 80 × 100
= 90.00 points
Height-adjusted High Jump · Long Jump · Wall Climb · Hedge Jump
Ratio = result ÷ dog's height
Points = dog's ratio ÷ best global ratio × 100
Example
Dog height 50 cm
Jump result 150 cm
Dog ratio 3.00
Best global ratio 3.40
3.00 ÷ 3.40 × 100
= 88.24 points
20-minute cap Hangtime · Tug Of War
Points = hold time ÷ 20 min × 100
Example
Dog's time 13:30
13.5 ÷ 20 × 100
= 67.50 points
Reaching 20:00 = the full 100 points.

Hangtime & Tug Of War — discipline ranking

Hangtime and Tug Of War are max-time disciplines. On the discipline statistics page, dogs are ranked by how many times they have completed the full 20 minutes — not by raw points. If several dogs have reached 20:00, the one with the most 20-minute completions is ranked highest.

Example Hangtime ranking
Rank Dog Best time 20:00 completions
1Boss20:0014
2Nova20:009
3Diesel20:004
4Rex18:42

Boss is ranked above Nova because Boss has completed the full 20 minutes more times. This affects only the overall discipline ranking — Event Score is still based on the time held in that specific event.

Approval & locks

Each event must be approved before its results count. Once approved, the Event Score for every participating dog is permanently locked. Current Level and ELO continue to update — Event Score does not. This keeps history honest: a 2024 record can still be read against today's best, but the points the dog earned that day stay exactly the points the dog earned that day.
